Julia Timpson, Education Director

Julia TimpsonJulia grew up in Germany where she attended a Waldorf School that her parents helped establish. As a teacher for several years, Julia has created and successfully implemented an original, innovative, and child-centered program across different ages of children. With a passion for the performing arts and music, she became an accomplished flute player and teacher as well as a yoga instructor known for leading from the heart. She applies early childhood research directly to her classroom practice, inspired particularly by pedagogies of caring and social interaction. Having completed the American Language Program at Columbia University at the top of her class, Julia received her B.A. from Mills College in Oakland, CA and also a M.A. in Early Childhood Education. Julia strives to build strong relationships built on integrity and care in her community and with her own husband and two children.

Tanushree Samanta, Head Teacher

Tanu SamantaTanu was born and raised in New Delhi, India. She is grateful to her loving grandparents for teaching the importance of family and life values at an early age. With a BA in Literature and a Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations from Delhi University, Tanu worked with social media campaigns on AIDS and assisted immigrant Tibetan nuns living in exile. In the US, Tanu completed both a Masters in Mass Communications and a Masters in Education from San José State University. She holds a multiple subject teaching credential from the State of California. Tanu taught primary grades in Franklin-McKinley School District and Santa Clara Unified. Her most recent position was of a Kindergarten teacher at Theuerkauf Elementary (MVWSD) where she taught for about 2 years before taking a break to raise a family. Tanu believes that education begins with and builds on trust, mutual respect, compassion and integration of personal and practical experiences. Tanu is passionate about music, sports, learning new languages and cultures, and spending quality time with loved ones. She is trained in Indian Classical music (vocal) and continues to participate in cultural programs in the Bay Area. She lives with her husband, Supratik and two daughters, Shinjini (soon to be a 1st grader) and Shrinika who is 3 years old.

Theodore Timpson, Head of School

Theodore TimpsonTheodore is the founder and president of Young Spirit Foundation, advocating for schools that create space for wisdom and connection in young people's lives. Theodore has taught for twenty years at all elementary levels, and extensively tutored high school students in math and test preparation. He specializes in original approaches to teaching that create a natural connection between student and subject, having developed a unique concept-based math program, and directed several children's theater productions. He has facilitated workshops at a number of national conferences and local organizations. Theodore holds a B.A. in English from Harvard University and a M.S. in Education from Bank Street College in New York City, an institution recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for its pioneering work with children. He also has a M.S. in Educational Leadership from San Jose State University. Theodore's motivation to create schools comes from a philosophy of building identity through reflective engagement. He enjoys getting smiles and giggles from his two children in Mountain View, California.
